Overview
A set of face cards and back pattern picturing characters from Russian folklore: Ivan the Fool (Jack), Baba Yaga (Queen), and Koschei the Deathless (King). Each card pictures the face character in an environment related to nature and animals in some way, reflecting the degree to which Russian life (particularly in the time folk tales refer to) revolves around nature. The design for the back of the playing cards combines nature motifs with footprints of the different creatures featured in each of the cards emanating from the center.
The designs draw inspiration from Russian folk art, specifically the Mezen style of painting that was popular in 19th century Russia. Mezen paintings are in red, white, and black with heavily abstracted, flowing linework and nature motifs.
